Abstract. This is a review of worldwide land degradation problems. Four themes are emphasized: delineating and estimating the magnitude of soil erosion, quantifying erosion and sedimentation impacts on land productivity, establishing quantitative values for erosion-causing parameters, and implementing global and regional soil and water conservation programs. He observed that soil erosion can be significant enough to topple empires, while conservation practices helped sustain other civilizations for centuries. The bulletin was originally printed in and later reprinted in without change. Lowdermilk was the former assistant chief of the Soil Conservation Service, now called the USDA NRCS.

Soil erosion and conservation soil scientists and other professionals interested in soil and water conservation. The book includes twenty-one chapters, nine appendices and an index, a list of abbreviations, signs, symbols and Imperial to SI units conversion tables. Each chapter is well-illustrated, includes several worked examples and an. Mar 19,  · Land degradation from soil erosion has been considered by many to be a problem of significant proportion, affecting some % of the earth's land surface. At the time of the first publication of this book in , estimates indicated that million hectares of land were being lost each year through erosion and salinisation from irrigation and that at such a rate of loss, topsoil Reviews: 1.
